Vitals 1.3 is out, and the app now works in ten languages besides English:
- German
- French
- Spanish
- Italian
- Dutch
- Swedish
- Brazilian Portuguese
- Japanese
- Korean
- Simplified Chinese
If you missed the launch, Vitals is an Activity Monitor alternative for Mac. It groups every process under the app it belongs to, so you see about 60 apps instead of 1,000 processes. I wrote about why I built it when it came out.
Why I did it
A system monitor is full of technical terms: memory pressure, swap, energy use, disk writes. Those words are hard enough in your own language. In a second language, you end up guessing what a number means, or opening Activity Monitor to check, which defeats the point of having a better tool.
Activity Monitor is already in your language. If Vitals is going to replace it, it has to be too.
The same words as your Mac
I did not translate Vitals word by word. For every term, the translation uses the word Apple already uses in macOS and Activity Monitor for that language.
Italian is a good example. Activity Monitor in Italian calls memory pressure “Utilizzo della memoria”, which reads more like “memory use” than a word-for-word translation. Vitals uses the same words, because that is what an Italian Mac shows. In German, memory used is “Speicher (belegt)”, again Apple’s wording.
This matters because you have already learned those words from your Mac. When you see the same term in Vitals, you know it means the same thing, and you can put the two apps side by side and compare the numbers.
How to use it
There is nothing to set up. Vitals follows your Mac’s language.
If your Mac is in English but you want Vitals in another language, or the other way round:
- Open System Settings → General → Language & Region.
- Under Applications, click + and add Vitals.
- Pick the language you want for it.
Settings in Vitals now has a Language section that says which language it is in and how to change it.
The website is translated into the same ten languages, so you can read about Vitals, the guides and the Activity Monitor glossary in your language before you buy.
Also in 1.3
- Pin an app to the top. Right-click it in the window and choose Pin. It stays at the top of every list, whatever you sort by.
- ⌘F from any tab. On a tab without a list, such as Overview, Vitals opens Memory with the search field ready.
- Choose where the window opens. Overview, the tab you used last, or any tab you like, in Settings → General → Open Window On.
- Power on Macs without a battery. A Mac mini, iMac or Mac Studio now shows how much power the whole Mac is drawing, in Temperature & Fans. Any Mac can show it in the menu bar.
- A shorter Settings. General has fewer lines. The details appear when you hold the pointer over a setting.
The full list is in the changelog.
Help me get it right
I checked every term against Apple’s, but I cannot read ten languages the way a native speaker does. If a word in Vitals looks wrong to you, email me with the word and where you saw it. I will fix it in the next release.
The update is free for everyone who owns Vitals. Vitals offers it the next time it checks for updates. New to Vitals? Get it for Mac.
